Job Description

EXTREME Hangout General Manager


Inspired by our love of adventure sports and our passion to protect the planet, we established The Extreme Hangout as a climate action platform giving young people a voice and to drive environmental action. We are now looking for a brilliant individual who will manage and lead the roll out of this important initiative, you will be passionate and committed to sustainability and driving environmental action, with a strong management skill set. You will be comfortable working with multiple stakeholders and have the confidence to drive and build the whole foundation forward.




Amber Nuttall the sustainability manager at Extreme International, had the idea and vision for The EXTREME Hangout and it was launched at COP26 in Glasgow, and it became one of the leading fringe events. We took over a repurposed ferry on the River Clyde, close to the main action, where we ran an 11-day youth conference and hub with over 200 high profile speakers, 5000 visitor and 5 million video impressions. The Global Plan


With the EXTREME Hangout, we want to engage and inspire young people, harness the power of sport, champion actions worth taking, work collaboratively with and connect amazing partners who are thinking outside the box and amplify the volume of all doing climate action work. With this initiative we are looking to find the gears to turn the cogs to amplify the volume to drive massive behavioural change. Based on this and building on the success at Glasgow we have just onboarded PWC as a global partner and are now rolling out an ambitious programme with the goal to deliver 50 local impact events in 50 locations over the next 5 years.


The annual Extreme Hangout programme is part of an engagement plan to drive climate action through 3 areas:


  1. The Extreme Hangout at COP - Our major annual event will be held at COP every year, live streamed globally.

  2. The global event series is set to run in city, beach, and mountain locations around the world in partnership with local Ted X event organisers, with the objective to connect, engage and amplify local voices and drive local action.

  3. The Extreme Hangout video and voice podcast series for year-round engagement and available on multiple platforms.


Last year, The Extreme Hangout at COP27 ran from the 8-11 November 2022 and was located at the Park Regency Hotel, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. We were in a tented pavilion by the beach, overlooking the Red Sea and co located alongside the New York Times Climate Hub. This year Extreme Hangout was at COP28 in Dubai for 10 days (03 Dec – 12 Dec 2023) exciting days in the green zone, people all over the world joined us in person and via the live stream for dynamic and inspirational youth-led talks and panels, networking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, yoga and much, much more!

About The Role


We are looking for someone who is entrepreneurial, passionate, energetic and go getting, committed to sustainability, and driving environmental action and with a strong background in the management and growth of impact platforms who can manage all aspects of the program and lead the team as we roll out multiple events across multiple cities. This role focuses on extensive external communication, and the ideal candidate for this role would be an experienced marketing and communications manager, with strong conference management and organisation experience that is adept at developing community-led campaigns and comfortable setting strategy for a combination of digital and physical activities.


Desired Educational Background and Experience


• BSc/BA in Business, Marketing, Communication, or relevant field; MSc/MA is a plus.

• Proven experience as a General Manager, marketing manager or similar executive role (Minimum 5 years’ experience).

• Proven conference management and organisation experience.

• 3-5 years of experience in sales or business development in a B2B environment

• Experience with building effective event or impact marketing campaigns.

• Experience in managing junior teams/interns.

• Computer literacy and familiarity with Pipedrive or other CRM systems

• Experience designing and implementing PR and communications campaigns.

• Direct experience of sponsor partnership account management.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to.


1. Sales and Marketing


  • Manage the production of marketing materials in support of Extreme Hangout development.

  • Maintain current notes and CRM records in Pipedrive.

  • Understand target audiences and assist teams to develop a strategy for growth that supports the set goals.

  • Develop, plan, oversee, and lead all marketing initiatives for Extreme Hangout.

  • Oversee the development content for dissemination via press releases, social media, websites, and other distribution channels.

  • Develop and lead strategies to generate widespread brand awareness and event attendance.

  • Coordinate sales efforts with marketing programs.

  • Contribute to planning/strategy meetings with the senior management team.

  • Create customized sponsorships and sales materials as needed.


2. General Management


  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Extreme Hangout team

  • Develop a strategy and set goals for growth of Extreme Hangout

  • Source, liaise, and negotiate with vendors, sponsors, and partners.

  • Oversee the recruitment of new employees and supervise Extreme Hangout staff.

  • Meet with the staff regularly to discuss plans, goals, and strategies.

  • Maintain budgets and optimize expenses.

  • Present suggestions to enhance the event’s success.

  • Oversee the production and delivery of the Hangout events at COP.

The foundations have been laid and all the pieces are in place to build the Extreme Hangout into something extraordinary with significant and long-lasting impact and effect and we are now looking for the right individual to drive and lead it.
